After our first escape-trip to Athens, which wasn't quite what we expected, we gave it another go in Barcelona. After getting many references to 'La Cerveseria' we started our trip here.
We had heard that this room is sponsored by a major brand, so we were expecting already quite a bit. Unfortunately, the first sight of the building and entrance did not immediately confirm that. It was very basic and not clean or cozy. Fortunately, that was immediately swept aside as soon as we stepped into the room. You'll notice right away that the room is sturdy and well maintained with beautifully crafted puzzles.
You receive a certain gimmick in advance which is certainly not an added value, we thought. Rather a bit annoying. I get the idea of it, but it would have played better without this 'thing'.
We played the room as a duo, and that is quite a challenge. I suspect that usually the minimum is 4 players, but that they allow it to foreigners like us. I do not advise the 2-player version though. It was a challenge. We lacked eyes, hands and brains. because of that we were very focused on the time which is unfortunately shown in the room and therefore we couldn't really relax and enjoy game. But that's entirely our own fault. In retrospect, the room is super logical and the puzzles tell 99% of the story. Very clever. Thinking logical is the solution here. 2 puzzles felt as extra thought. They were meant to open an entrance and had nothing to do with the theme or story.. a pity. Some of the puzzles are a bit trite but included in the package we liked them anyway.
A very high-tech room with an enormous puzzle density, very diverse puzzles and beautifully maintained. No wow-effects but made with passion and quite the budget.
Some advice: Play this room with an alcoholic. So did I. You will enjoy it twice as much.
Shout out to our very nice host and owner Agustí, with whom we chitchatted afterwards for quite a while.

After half of our team had gotten drunk in 'La Cerveseria' we continued on foot to our next adventure. Combining these rooms is definitely recommended because they are extremely close to each other.
'La Cerveseria' was well finished so we weren't hoping for any less. We arrived just in time, rang the bell and were immediately launched into the game. It was immediately clear that a finishing touch is of less importance here. The room was not very well maintained. In retrospect, this fits 100% with the theme, but you'll notice the difference between escape rooms where the wear and tear is deliberately created or when it's just broken and bruised. It often felt more dirty than dilapidated. And the unsoothing in-game restroom is still a concept we have to get used to very much.
Nevertheless, after an insufficient first chapter comes the reveal of the room and you get to see what was awaiting you, the district that you will get to explore. Apart from a few basic ideas, almost all puzzles are surprising and extremely fun. It fits perfectly with the setting as well while the different parts of the district will open up for you. I have often stood and watched what fun techniques there were used. Unfortunately, 'the room where it happens' feels like a step back. It could have been a better setting and more original in content, but it detracts very little from the overall experience. We had an awesome experience. We Played well, had a good laugh and a nice conversation with the hospitable host. 'Distrito 111' is a must-play.

The last stop on our schedule would've been a Lockhill room, but since our experience with them a few days earlier had not been entirely satisfactory, we took it of the schedule and followed another tip.
Escapolis is by far the most beautiful branch we visited in Athens. They know how to lure and captivate its visitors with beautiful visuals and interior. Each poster is appealing and you immediately want to discover them all. We were hoping that the creative brain behind the marketing had also designed the rooms.
A friendly, experienced host took us to the beautifully decorated and illuminated corridor and started a 10-minute explanation of what to expect. Far too long, and in our opinion unnecessary if you know that you're dealing with experienced players. From this dip we were 'moved' to the room, where you'll notice immediately that the decor is not subordinate to the experience. The room is nicely decorated and maintained (except for 1 puzzle which could not be solved because of the wear). The atmosphere is clear and takes you in quite a bit.
The puzzles fit the theme. Not that easy to be honest. Not too original either, but fun.
We'd been doing horror escapes all week so we thought we could handle this one, but were we wrong.. The lighting, sound and effects work really well together here. We only dared to move forward in group. The only pity is that the actor is wearing an absurd mask (which is a thing in Athens apparently) which for us detracted from the style and credibility. Also some attributes that he had with him were just not quite right for me. Furthermore, a good experience with a clear build-up.
I instantly wanted to play another room here, which the host allowed us, but our schedule was just too tight unfortunately. So, I'll definitely be back to do some more rooms here.

Going to play the #1 ranked room in the world comes with great expectations. Expectations insurmountably high to fulfill. That's one thing, but from our point of view 'Chapel & Catacombs' lacked too much to represent what a #1 room needs to have.
The room started great, awesome even. The only crooked thing was that an in-game character at reception started asking us which escaperooms we played :s ... but luckily thereafter the story continued. The Chapel-part of this experience made me assume why this room was high-ranked. The setting was beautifull, the tasks so lovely and the scenes were really great to be a part of. Everything that happened was amazing to see and experience. We wanted more of those scenes and playing with the actors.
But unfortunately the best wasn't saved for last. Before we entered the catacombs-part a puzzle we were struggling with was clearly overruled. Suddenly the puzzle was done, the next door opened and we entered a little ill-tempered. From there on it only went down, down into the catacombs. The decor was much more minimal, some puzzels didn't fit the story AT ALL and the routing/guidance was really unclear. The area is so huge that it is impossible to sense where to be. It included some settings we liked but the interaction we loved in the chapel was nowhere to be found anymore. It was very unclear what was tried to be told. Even when the owner explained the story and its details afterwards, we were unable to recognize this and tie the knots. There were too many unclear characters and settings and no evolution in the story of the middle part. Because the routing is so bad it felt like we lost a lot of time on that matter. Actors shouted us hints but though I like loud sound, we could not understand them over the volume.
Weirdly, near the ending an actor came to stand us by to solve a puzzle of which we couldn't have remembered the information during the experience. Thereafter he rushed us to the end-apotheose. Storywise there were happening great things but he made it all feel very plain. It could have been so much more exciting, and that is a good conclusion of this experience.
Afterwards we would’ve loved to meet the actors behind the mask after the game finishes. But no mask were removed, so it was weird to talk ‘out of the game’ while only a character from in the game was in front of us.
The beginning was really amazing and lovely. Clear storytelling there with cinematic effects. Everything looked really nice and thrilling atmosphere. But down in the catacombs, we were left hungry, especially storywise.

Ice Tiki should’ve been the relief of our trip, but the smiles on our faces were rather cringy. We heard we should wear funny socks for playing this room so we had bought a nice pair in advance for the four of us.
We easily found the location in a suburb and were welcomed by a friendly host and his loveable dog. The lobby itself was not too inviting though. It’s clearly build in an old backroom and doesn’t look fresh. The controlroom was set in the same room as well and not a single care was given about our beautifull socks :(
However the host/creator seemed passionate and after a simple introduction he leaded us into the room. From the very first moment you notice it’s a hobby-crafted-room. Not the biggest cost was made for building this room. It felt like it was made from left-over materials and the maintenance could have been way better. The room is visibly aged and worn out. The techniques were simple and the puzzles not too original. If you would play this room, you will definitely have some fun but it’s a very basic-starter room. An outstanding room in 2015 probably but it can not compete against the 2020’s standard.
For us 120 minutes in this room was too long. There are no surprises or evolutions that keep you excited. You will vaguely understand the story and its themed puzzles but it will definitely not carry you away. Not worth playing anymore, definitely not when you’re making an TERPECAtour.

Before playing ‘Don’t Take A Breath’ we were warned that it’s a very unique concept. “Don’t expect to solve too much your own but enter and let the story and its characters lead you.” I think that’s an important thing to realise before booking this room. If you’re expecting an escaperoom.. DON’T. This is guided adventure. Unfortunately I found out that I don’t like this concept. You will not experience a single moment where your team has a choice. Your host will be constantly in touch and literally tell you what the next thing to do is. You don’t have to think yourself. There is no right or wrong and if you happen to not book quick progress in the small amount of ‘puzzles’ there are, the host will not hesitate to spoil the solution. Because of this, the game lacks tension of succeeding.
It also lacks danger. You will discover too early who your enemy is and what he looks like but he is not threatening at all. He is too ‘stupid’ to catch you, even when you are in plain sight (he will never give you the time to hide properly) and if he does cathes you, he will always be a gentleman... nothing to be afraid of. And if you do start catching scary feelings, the host will certainly interrupt you before you get too carried away.
The setting and atmosphere is quite great though. A big decor with cool lighting and remarkable moments and passages. Quite different from the other rooms in Athens. A great job really. And important, it’s safe. Precautions are taken in dangerous passages. Also the intro is remarkable. I love to think about it once in a while. An exciting build-up and the character you meet is a unique creation. Afterwards you’ll meet him, because Verone is the creator and will always be the host. A lovely, passionate man! Crazy, but you’ll love him immediately. No complaints on this behalf. All in all, one of the better games/experiences in Athens but it does not tick all the boxes for me.

We were told No Exit is a high flyer in Athens and they advised us to book their new room which might be worth it. So we did.
We played 'El Exorcista' and 'Death Row' earlier on the trip en they were definitely not too bad. So, we were pretty excited to see how they would pull off a non-scary room... They managed well.
The room starts playfull in a weird little lobby and our host was clearly as excited as us. He appears in different characters. You'll need to use your imagination to not recognize him but he does it with great dedication. And in a weird way.. it's perfect for this concept (except for the dancer in jeans).
Just as the intro, the room continues to be playfull. It's a funny and colorfull experience with cute intermezzo's and a basic story. It will never carry you away too much. The decor is neath and pretty. It's not 100% credible but for this games' vibe, it's just about right.
The fresh puzzles are fun to solve and are integrated in the story. You'll discover some nice passages and the time will go by pretty fast in this unique and fun

On our escape trip to Athens of course we had to do ‘Woman in Black’. I’ve read some things on the subject and people I knew were blazing about it. Well, perhaps I should reconsider these friendships because it was quite the deception.
The building was easily found, we knocked the door and waited. Nothing happened so we repeated the process until 15 minutes later someone opened the door to let us in. Quite a great start..
It was our second day so we were not surprised anymore to see an amateur-play-decor often and notice that we were definitely not one of the first to have experienced this room. It does not look good. And the intro in it didn’t get us in the mood either. You receive a lot to read and are basically explaining the story to yourself. Which may have been the best option because our host wasn’t too easy to understand.
However, we went for it, and a couple of minutes into our game. We experienced some amusing technics. Even the decor turned out pretty neat for a moment but it didn’t last long.. Or.. not that we could see actually because the rooms were so dark. All of us stubbed their toes hard and tripped from time to time. Our actor, the Woman in Black, lived up to her name. It could have been the Man in Black as well, because able to see her, we were not. But if this is the concept of the name of the game, well done I’d say. It is spooky, yeah, and that’s great but unfortunately for us the concept didn’t work out too well. it does hide the tacky decor and props but that is not what you want to see when traveling so far for it. You want to SEE things.
The puzzles were also pretty worn off and with a minimum of light, it is hard to solve them. Some were original though and funny fact: the ones in which I had the most fun included the use of light.
Fast forward to the outro. Strangely enough it’s just like the intro. The host/actor isn’t really a plus. You’re reading again yourself, he salutes you and closes the door of the story behind you. A couple of seconds later he reopens it and introduces his real name. We were happy to have a little chat with him about the team and the room but we were also glad to keep going quickly.
The most outstanding parts for me are the abilities of the actor inside. He knows the room like the back of his hand and shifts in no time from one Side of the room to the other. It gave him/her.. IT a supernatural touch. Along with the easy to follow story and (too dark but) thrilling atmosphere I tried pulling myself out of the deception, but with little to no success. If you happen to be near, skip this one.

After having played ‘Woman in Black’ earlier that day, which had disappointed us, we were hoping for ‘The Sacrifice’ to make up for it. We arrived way too early and the intercom directed us to come back on the reserved time. Fine, it builds up the excitement. However.. when we ringed the bell on the exact time we received no sign of life for 15 minutes. Even when the previous players exited the building it still took 5 more minutes for someone to reach out to us. A wait of 20 minutes without any response. I started to consider it as ‘maybe a thing’ here, but as a foreign player I couldn’t appreciate it AT ALL. For me the game started with something to compensate for.
Just like ‘Woman in Black’ you’re reading and explaining the introduction to yourself, which isn’t the most exciting but the atmosphere was quite there.. maybe a little bit too aggressive though.
The scenery in which they put you is pretty impressive. It is dark, so it hides a lot, but different from ‘Woman in Black’ you are able to see where you are. Unfortunately this does not apply to dangerous passages which totally killed the mood for us. To keep it short, one of us continued the route and arrived in pitch black on a (what later seemed to be) stair-like-construction and tumbled down head-first. For us who stayed behind, it was almost as horrifying as for her to see someone disappear into a dark depth while screaming. She had a very bad fall, we shouted for help, to turn the light on.. but for at least 5 minutes, not a single response came. She was helplessly crying in pain beneath us in the dark while we remained calling for help upstairs.. still not being able to see what she had fallen into and how bad her state was. While we were hoping that we didn’t have to call an ambulance finally someone came in and.. threw in an icepack? We were told to descend further and that there would be light in the next room.. They did not have any options to create light in such a dangerous passage. We managed to reach to next room where we took a serious breath and checked the damage. No host in sight, only the icepack. Unfortunately because of her injuries she had to quit. Because of the fact that she assured us that she would manage it in the lobby, we continued. To this point the scenery was exciting and puzzles were well made, not too original but interesting enough to be curious. However, we were not able to get past the circumstances and I believe I can not give a 100% correct opinion about the rest of the game. The scenery stayed quite cool, but we were not able to find any fun in solving the rest of the puzzles. The scares on their behalf were too much in your face and did not add any value to the story. I guess we already had quite a shocker.
After the game we were reunited with a badly bruised friend. There was taken great care of her but they didn’t seem to realise the gravity of the situation. From this day on we are very aware of the safety in escaperooms. There is a great difference though in Athens. As an example ‘Verone’ and ‘Lockhill’ are very keen on safety but here at Disappear Escaperooms it is below zero in several aspects and it would not be able to pass Dutch regulations.

This was our second room of the escape trip through Athens. A game on the same location and evening of our first room. After playing ‘Death Row' and having taken a breath our host informed us about some things and suddenly the lights blacked out. Yes, this was a horror room. I had played a couple of horror-games but we were warned about the Greece-horror rooms who could apparently be really scary and involve more than one actor. I can already tell you I was more than scared and this room was definitely my #1 room of the trip.
The room started off a bit wonky. The riddle was clear but the electronics were failing. It took us long to detect the correct millimeter, but after that we could enter the main area of the game. It was PITCH BLACK and I was so scared already. We were immediately introduced to everything I was waiting for. The main actress in this room was A-MA-ZING! Was she even human? It was clear she had played this part already a tons of times and could ‘walk' through this room blindly. Especially the ways from where she entered, where she suddenly appeared and the mechanics of the room helping her is what I will remember. The decor is not so amazing but I was warned about this. However I could not set aside the fact that a fancier decor would've uplifted the whole experience. The decor seemed amateuristic and broken. It had an old feel which fitted the story but it was clear that it was cheap and they didn't care too much about it. But with the things that are happening here you can still enjoy your game very much.
The riddles fitted the story and I enjoyed solving them. After the start everything worked quite well and we had an amazing flow (the lights guide you very well) even though we were enormously scared. The further the game continues, the better you get to know the actors and the less scarier it gets. They start feeling more like friends than enemies, which is maybe a bad thing. The actors enter so often and you get to understand their behavior that the horror level minimalizes a bit. You start trusting the characters, which you actually shouldn't. Also the craziest effects of the room are thrown at you in the first 15 minutes. It would've been nicer if they were spread a bit more and that the silence could create the scary atmosphere instead of the constant appearance.
On another point in the room a lock wasn't opening which cost us a lot of time and frustration. So again I'm recalling on the cheap take on this room but just as their other rooms, the effects in ‘El Exorcista' in combination with the actors are some of the best I've ever seen.
After the game we were brought to the foyer where there was kept an eye on us again the whole time. I miss some alone time at No Exit. The host is constantly sitting beside you which creates an awkward atmosphere because she's not conversating the whole time, just watching. This is something I find extremely unpleasant. But the game itself is really worth travelling for. If the decor was created on the same level as the experience itself this could've definitely been have one of the best rooms I have ever played. I'll be back when their new room ‘Jigsaw' is opened.

After the TERPECA awards of this year we were very curious to all the high scoring rooms that were located in Athens. So we were longing for our first far-away escape trip. We were planning on playing every winning room there but because of the long duration of the rooms (which I loved) we selected only 9 that our friends and online media had advised us.
Our first evening we drove to a No Exit-location where we would play ‘Death Row' and ‘El Exorcista'. On our last day we would return for their non-TERPECA room ‘Death or Alive'.
Starting with ‘Death Row'. We arrived in the dark, the patio was abandoned so we ringed at the door of the suburban building. An actor/host opened and took us to the start of the escaperoom. Though the route to the entrance of the room was obviously just the foyer covered in darkness and not in theme of this story, the atmosphere was quite there. So was the one in the room itself. The decor was pretty good and the actor was played in a very convincing way. Unfortunately you noticed that how further you went in the game, further away from the main area, the decor became less important for the builders, but not to me.
The story is about us who are locked in jail and have to fix the electric chair. The whole game you're trying to escape out of your cells and improving the flaws of the electric chair. The weird thing is.. At the end the story isn't focusing about the chair anymore. Your just trying to escape and the big apotheose with the chair you're waiting for does not come. So for me the story ended quite sudden without completing the mission they gave you. Especially ‘cause quite some time you ARE fixing the chair for a fact. Why not completing this task too?
On another point in the game the actor entered when we were in the middle of the puzzle and took us to a previous area for an intermezzo. This was really weird. It added nothing to the evolution of the story or the puzzle we were doing. It took us some time afterwards to get back into the game. We would've liked to have this little scene cut.
The riddles were not too original and if they were, a bit far fetched, though they were fun solving. Most things were created very well, other things on the other hand were badly handcrafted and could have fitted better in the story in another way. I don't like reading too much, and luckily there wasn't much to read, so that was good. The riddles were more about noticing things and playing with numbers to crack or enter codes. One part could be improved. You're put in prison, so you get chained and strapped up. The straps could be opened very easily so we did that immediately. The host interrupted us that the strapped person should stay strapped. We didn't know why because that person could not do anything for 15 minutes. We understood it later for the effect that follows, but we would've liked a strap out of which none of us could free the strapped person earlier, as it is intended by the creator.
Back to the crafting. I think this is their biggest asset. Not only in this story, but in all of their rooms. They have made such cool effects. In this room I'm talking about the way things open and how passages appear. I was gazing quite often with open mouth when these happened.
A female host took us back to the foyer, now lit and offered us some water. I always like it when you get some minutes for yourself without the host sitting beside you. Especially when she's not really asking or telling you anything. She asked some basic things and watched us sitting. So it was a little bit awkward sometimes. However she was very sweet, and later another host joined who was way more relaxed with us. Still some minutes alone time would've been nice.
A great experience but not really surprising. I've played prison rooms that I liked better. Worth playing, not worth traveling for so much.

After having heard a lot about this experience I finally managed to go and help Brandon Darkmoore with this curious case. The foyer is impeccable. Well designed and the smart control booth is an interesting thing. We played all 4 of the rooms and this one was our second one. We were send to the back of the building to re-enter the same staircase as the previous game which felt cheap for a second but luckily the adventure waiting for us was anything but.
This room is amazing. It's definitely not your everyday escaperoom, but a real STORY. A scary one, but comic-book like, which happily reminded me of the 'Ernie Hudsons' in Hamburg. Besides that, you're not really solving puzzles (one or two) but your following the steps of the story, which makes the comic book experience even stronger. It makes me wonder if I love a non-puzzle experience like this more than an escaperoom. Very well decorated and I'm not going to start about the electronics used in the room and props. Some great WOW-effects and mindfucks that were well thought out. The story is very clear, original and fun to be in. A little bit scary with a very unexpected twist. It does make the ending a bit strange 'cause you'd expect something totally different.. I would've have kept the scary sauce thicker there to make the switch less rough, but it was a very amusing sequence anyway. One remark in the story is that they tell you you're missing an object before you start which will 'maybe' be found during your search BUT it is impossible that this object could've been lost there. There's also no added value to the missing/finding of this object.
I loved this room to the max. It managed to carve out a place in my fav-list and leaves me behind very, very inspired.

We played all 4 games at THE ROOM and this was our debutant.
Me myself, I don't know too much of the Berlin history, so I was a bit skeptical. My friend with whom I played however is a DDR-fanatic so I had my own narrator beside me who fact-dropped wherever she could. She lost it with every specific reference to DDR-history and the 80's. Surprisingly this made me experience the story and setting to the fullest and I enjoyed the not so original puzzels too. Some nice surprises in the setting made me blossom even more. There were some unnecessary distracting elements, cables were not so well hidden and some parts were damaged through time but I personally had a great time playing.

Alles is heel 'clean'.

Game Over, inderdaad.

REVIEW DECEMBER '18:
Na lang wachten speelden we in juni 'The Dome'.
