Miss Rose is the secretary of lawyer Clarence Darrell. She had to leave the office earlier on that late autumn afternoon, because she had to go to a doctor's appointment.
When she was gone, Mr. Darrell hurried back to his office. With shaking hands he dialed a phone number and sank into his chair. Soon he heard someone with a deep voice who answered:"Hello? Ernie Adams."
Still absorbed in his phone conversation, he flinched when he heard a noise in Miss Rose's reception office. He jumped out of his chair and pushed the door open. Horror spread across his face. There was Miss Rose, standing in the middle of the room with an envelope in her hand, looking frightened.
She didn't appear for her doctor's appointment. And since that evening nobody had seen her.
